MAAT (balance)"MAAT" is a tangibly interactive reflection on Ancient Egyptian beliefs of maat, the hidden balance behind all natural cycles in our universe, and the infinite fight against a persistent disorder.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat01.jpeg" border="0" width="600" height="353" width_o="600" height_o="353" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat01_o.jpeg" align="left" />
"The Egyptian conception of the universe centered on maat, a word that encompasses several concepts in English, including "truth," "justice," and "order." It was the fixed, eternal order of the universe, both in the cosmos and in human society. It had existed since the creation of the world, and without it the world would lose its cohesion. In Egyptian belief, maat was constantly under threat from the forces of disorder, so all of society was required to maintain it. On the human level this meant that all members of society should cooperate and coexist; on the cosmic level it meant that all of the forces of nature—the gods—should continue to function in balance. This latter goal was central to Egyptian religion. The Egyptians sought to maintain maat in the cosmos by sustaining the gods through offerings and by performing rituals which staved off disorder and perpetuated the cycles of nature."

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat03.jpeg" border="0" width="600" height="337" width_o="600" height_o="337" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat03_o.jpeg" align="left" />
The balance board is custom made with a knob mechanism embedded within, attached to an Arduino board.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat02.jpeg" border="0" width="600" height="400" width_o="600" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat02_o.jpeg" align="left" />

The rotation of the knob manipulates the legibility of the word "MAAT" projected onto the wall using The Net Lab Toolkit, the typography itself was created using Processing.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat04.jpeg" border="0" width="600" height="399" width_o="600" height_o="399" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/931439/maat04_o.jpeg" align="left" />

Only upon reaching a perfect balance on the board does the word "maat" become legible. This interaction mimics precisely the struggle the Ancient Egyptian air god, Shu, assisted by other gods, experiences in order to hold the sky (Nut) up as the earth (Geb) lies beneath. It is this struggle that keeps our universe in order.

What would The Weather Channel be like if it Paganism was the leading theology today, and the scientific revolution never happened? Weather Lore is a brief exploration of what life may be like if these turning points in our nation's history were to have never happened. By overlaying samples of ancient weather lore beliefs on found weather channel footage, I am exploring the position a large network such as the Weather Channel may take in a down-graded scientific and technological context.

YPORTNE is a piece of business plan fiction, exploring design fiction, but more specifically fictional entrepreneurship as a catalyst for discussion about conglomeration, it's flaws, and it's potentials. The YPORTNE story is told within the framework of a business plan, using revisions and time itself as individual characters in the story. Download business plan (PDF)

"YPORTNE aims to provide the world with products that can help make our world of reversed entropy more livable. This new natural creation of order from all disorder will lead to the conclusion to all world wars resulting in world peace, and the impossibility of destruction to our household possessions. This reversal of time will change the way in which our customers perceive the world, turning death into birth, and birth into death, and creating a world that is, by definition, flawless. However, with flawlessness comes an entirely new set of previously unforeseen flaws. This is where YPORTNE comes in. YPORTNE exists to lead the business world as a new type of conglomerate, one that will take leadership over 100% of the global market, their products, and their employees, making every product and service possible in response to the inevitable reversal of entropy."

Fictional Entrepreneurship is the use of design fiction to imagine businesses in order to discover what could be, creating things that are not impossible, but possible, derived from utopian, theoretical, and philosophical principles. Fictional entrepreneurship aims to author critical media through the creation of enterprises (imaginary, and real).

This schematic aims to summarize an extensive investigation into futurist theory researched for "Micro Meta Mega," a research initiative at the Art Center College of Design. When prompted to layout the "landscape of our future," I decided to take it quite literally, inventing a city block that is full of fictional and non-fictional organizations and corporations that aim to summarize and represent thoughts inspired by some of the greatest futurist predictions and research, as well as my own aspirations and foresight inspired by these findings.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/1692542/Screen shot 2011-07-06 at 2.03.55 PM.png" border="0" width="670" height="458" width_o="768" height_o="525" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/1692542/Screen shot 2011-07-06 at 2.03.55 PM_o.png" align="left" />

Key Points & Predictions:
• OS integration into our daily objects, even the most mundane and every day.
• The urban landscape as a mecca for data collection & visualization.
• Break-throughs in neurology transform web 2.0 notions from online to biological existence.
• Government systems that are open and editable by the public.
• A cultural record that is collected by the environment itself.
• Social Media as a replacement for all surveillance systems.
• "The cloud" as a religious belief and daily observance.

"Bravo Gustavo" is a sub-section of the larger Los Angeles Philharmonic website created at Hello Design to promote the LAPhil's new Music Director, Gustavo Dudamel. For this project, I was put in charge of the production of visuals for the game for both online and iphone, having conducted motion tests and assembled stop-motion sets of photographs from recent performances by Gustavo and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

As game experience and production assistant, I assisted in the technical aspects of the game by working with XML code to properly sync the game's controls with the music and emotions of the piece in general. I assisted in the conceptualization of various game elements, studied how users interacted with the game in order to help create an appropriate scoring system, and created a series of levels to be released over time on the LAPhil's site.

The Oumedpo is a new poetry collective. We are the trans-poetic trio and our names are Matthew Manos and Salvador Orara. Our third member chooses to remain anonymous.

Using processes on the threshold of computation & conversation (google voice, audio & image spam captchas, google translate) poetry was written. Both members of the Oumedpo created a different set of parameters to invent the final outcome of the poetry.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/1588325/01.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="410" width_o="600" height_o="410" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/3384/1588325/01_o.jpg" align="left" />

Who is the author? If the poems are simply orchestrated by a human and written by a compiter, who owns the creative language? In pondering these questions, Salvador and I reflected on a computer's limitations, and the relevance of our own capabilities. As a result, we found that our contribution, or collaborative input, to the poetry was the performance of the language. The poetry was perfromed live at a poetry slam in Canoga Park, CA as well as at the Art Center College of Design.

In the spirit of being "Impractically, Practical," I worked with exhibition designer, Kate Slovin, to conceptualize a display format that would take the most practical aspect of an exhibition - name cards - and display them in the most impractical way possible. A grid of exactly 1/2 pound of black yarn was used to suspend the artist names. The show was a great success, with over 200 gallery-goers trickling in throughout the night.

The publication features the artists in the show, and aims to theorize and invent two categories of business-design: fictional entrepreneurship and diegetic business, two definitions for tools I am proposing that allow for the use of fiction in business model design to innovate new products and services that help us better understand our present situation through narrative and / or critical dialogue.

BaristaLab approached my studio to get them off the ground by creating a brand identity for the lab as well as a full functioning ecommerce website. Throughout the process, we became very inspired by the steampunk aesthetic as well as the schematic illustrations of espresso machines. these are what informed the final outcome.

"BaristaLab offers professional instruments and expertise for a quality coffee experience in your home. Our mission is to raise the level of appreciation for awesome coffee and the people who have a hand in producing excellent coffees around the world."
